Dining with Helen

March 19, 2007

Over the past several weeks, I have had the opportunity to travel to nearly all of the domestic offices of a major international law firm. In addition to conducting our Rules of Engagement program for junior lawyers, I have met with senior lawyers to discuss the importance of and techniques for building their professional networks.

Last week, in one of the firm’s offices, I met Helen, an extremely bright female senior associate. During my session, I had discussed the importance of developing an introduction that helps the introducer become memorable. After the program, Helen stopped by and mentioned that her introduction typically includes the following: Hi, I’m Helen, a rocket scientist turned lawyer. Turns out she really was a rocket scientist—she worked as an engineer in the aeronautics industry—and now practices law.

Helen also shared with me one of the techniques she uses to help build her professional network. Frequently, she reported, she eats out. When she does so, rather than hiding behind a newspaper or getting buried in a book, she makes a conscious effort to connect with other single diners. Several of these connections have eventually become members of her professional network, providing business insights and other advice.
