We're Having a Heat Wave

Business Etiquette's Three A's

According to all the weather web sites, this week, the entire nation will be socked by the hottest weather of the year. If you are an intern, summer associate or new hire facing the heat wave, keep business etiquette's three A's in mind:

Attendance – As tempting as it might be to take your laptop to the beach or pool and work from there, please don’t. I know you’re accustomed to working anytime and anywhere. Your employers, however, like seeing you in the office. Since they’re the ones who are paying your salary, accommodate them. Show up. And for heaven’s sake, if you decide to play hooky, don’t advertise it on your Facebook page. Trust me, the folks in HR have become Facebook pros.

Attire – Despite the heat, you still must dress for work. What’s appropriate varies from organization to organization. However, in general, you need to keep the better part of your body covered. Ladies please save your sundresses, halter tops, and shorts for the weekends. Gentlemen save your shorts for the weekends, and if you work in an office, please wear socks with your shoes.

Alcohol – Many organizations schedule loads of social events for their summer associates and interns, and inevitably, some of those events include open bars. Don’t make the mistake of consuming too much alcohol. Enjoy one beer or one glass of wine and then switch over to any other beverage that will ensure you keep your head about you. And for heaven’s sake, if you normally don’t drink alcoholic beverages, please don’t feel pressured to imbibe.
